Fun Fact: Only one team wins the World Series every year. Which means 29 teams don’t win the final game of the year which according to Moneyball means their season didn’t fucking matter. When a team gets eliminated from winning the World Series I’ll do a profile of their season.

Today’s Eliminated Team…The Colorado Rockies

How Did They Get Eliminated

The Rockies lost their chance at the division on August 21st when they lost to the Dodgers. A series that they surprisingly split with the defending Champions. On D-Elim Day they had won 7 of there last 10. And the team that eliminated them tied the Rockies for wins after the All-star break with 15.

But it was only 3 days later that they were fully eliminated from the playoff picture when they were swept by the Pirates. The Rockies were eliminated in true Rockies fashion by getting outscored 18-1.

What Do I Know About This Team Because I Only Follow the Brewers

The Rockies came to Milwaukee and were on the verge of getting swept by the Brewers. However, a home run off of All-Star Reliever Trevor Megill sent the game into extra innings where they would ultimately be victorious. This would send Brewers twitter into a tizzy because apparently if you can’t sweep the Rockies you aren’t a serious team that can be trusted to win the division or let your neighbor borrow a leaf blower.

But ever since that loss to the Rockies the Brewers are 34-12 and are the best team in baseball.

Orlando Arcia and Keston Hiura were both on this team at one point. I don't know if they are anymore. The one player that everyone wanted the Brewers to go after was Ryan McMahon but he was traded to the Yankees.

But the most obvious thing that everyone knows about this team is that they were at one time on pace to be the worst team to ever play professional baseball. Going back to when they had that win against the Brewers, since that game the Rockies have won only 18 games. The Brewers had an 11 and a 14 game winning streak during that time.

They had an absolutely atrocious start to the season winning their 10th game of the season after they first lost 50 games.

But misery loves company and when the Chicago White Sox came to town they for some reason had a sell-out. I don’t know how they sold this game out but I can only imagine they let people in attendance play in the game.

So Now That I’ve Actually Done Some Research What Happened to this Team

This team just never got out of the gate. Kris Bryant only played in 11 games but even he couldn’t have a WAR high enough to get this team out of the dumps. The pitcher that they have locked up for the next few years, Kyle Freeland is 3-13  with a 5.31 ERA.

The team is 21st in active roster payroll, but has $42 million of salary on the injured list right now. Kris Bryant and German Marquez eating up $37 million of that currently.  Also, fun fact, they are still paying Nolen Arenado $5 million next year for him to not produce offensively in St. Louis.

The team is last in the majors getting on base and in the bottom third in both slugging and average. For a team that plays in the thin air of the Rockies hits like they are in the bottom of the ocean. Good news they haven’t struck out the most, the bad news, they have struck out the second most in the majors.

They have given up the most home runs in the majors and they have given up the most runs per game as well. They have the second most errors. Opponents are batting .300 against them. Which is impressive considering only 3 guys will hit .300 in the entire league this year.  Almost every stat that you would look at to say, “oh, yeah that’s why they are a bad team” they lead in that stat. This team is made up of Achilles heels.

They fired Bud Black when he started the season 7-33. They made Warren Schaeffer the interim manager. The name sounds like he would be the Secretary of the Interior for the Eisenhower Administration.

Just nothing has gone right for this team. They are bad, and potentially historically bad. They are on pace to have the worst run differential in the history of baseball beating out the 1932 Red Sox.

Did Anything Go Right For This Team

The highlight of the season will clearly be when they gave up 9 runs in the top of the first to the Pirates and came back to win 17-16.

They also swept the Marlins so that was at least 3 straight wins.

For the final out of one of their wins the pitcher tried to jump over the 1st baseman to get the pop-out. He then acted like he was knocked out cold. During this moment I imagine he thought about how cool it would have been if he made a play like that for a team that was in a playoff chase.

As crazy as it sounds, they haven’t been the worst team since the All-Star Break. They have more wins since the All-Star break than the Mets, Cardinals and Giants. The 1st place Dodgers only have 1 more win than the Rockies since the All-Star break. So they got that going for them.

Are They Going to Get Good Anytime Soon?

Oooof, probably not. Their farm system is ranked in the 20s mostly because all of their young prospects are in the bigs.

Charlie Condon their 3rd Overall pick in 2024 is  projected to come to the big leagues in 2026, but is currently in AA and struggling to hit for power and has been injured.  Their 1st round pick in 2025 Ethan Holiday is supposedly a better player than his older brother Jackson, but he isn’t projected to be up in the big leagues until 2029. The issue you might have is the desperation to bring him up too soon. Right now according to MLB.com Holiday is their #1 prospect, and he has only been playing A ball for a hot second. Their number 3 prospect is projected for 2026 is only hitting .229 in Double-A.

The issue teams like the Rockies have is that they build up a huge pipeline of prospects but then wait forever to call them up so they don’t use up their service time. So while Condon and Carrigg could get call-ups next year the clock starts ticking until free agency. Nothing within the organization would suggest they are going to be active in free agency to build around Bryant and Freeland. They have locked in their Ezequial Tovar through 2030 to buy-up his team controlled years. Tovar is the future of this franchise and has a decent batting average but needs to start providing power. He also needs to work on his glove if he wants to be the everyday Shortstop he has a .973 fielding percentage. The next guy they could lock up is Hunter Goodman who has shown great improvement and is the future slugger of this Team.

Almost every player on their big league roster is under team control which I guess is good.  But this is what they are producing now.  So not as good.

They also need to figure out who wants to manage this team. Whoever steps into this role will have a tall task and more than likely won’t be the manager when this team starts to hit their stride. If that happens.

Just one postseason award

Rookie and name of the year for Warming Bernabel.  He just made his debut in late July but in a year where not a lot is going right Warming already has 4 home runs and is batting .295.  If Warming keeps this up Kris Bryant will be trade bait when the winter hot stove gets going.

Hey Grok, in 100 words summarize the 2025 Colorodo Rockies. Please don't be racist.

The 2025 Colorado Rockies season has been historically challenging, marking their 33rd year in MLB and 31st at Coors Field. With a record of 30-88, they sit last in the NL West, posting the worst 50-game start in modern MLB history at 8-42. Manager Bud Black was fired on May 11 after a 7-33 start, with Warren Schaeffer taking over as interim manager. Despite offensive struggles, with a .237 batting average and 441 runs scored, young talents like Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman show promise. The team clinched a seventh consecutive losing season.

I added the part about Hunter Goodman above when Grok informed me that he existed.

Did the Savannah Bananas Play at their Field?

They did! And the headline for the event from The Denver Post? “If only Denver could swap out the Rockies with the Bananas.” Ouch. But fair.

It was the largest sellout of a Major League Stadium for the Banasas. Peyton Manning showed up and so did Vinny Castilla. This is my first article but I’m going to go out on a limb and say starting right now that if the Savannah Bananas play a game in your stadium you won’t win the World Series that season.

Are there any baseball movies about this team that I need to talk about because of how badly they screw up how Major League Baseball works.

No one has ever done a movie around the Colorado Rockies but if they did they should make it a horror movie where someone gets murdered in the humidor.

How Will Your Team Do Next Year?

Probably not great. As mentioned above, who knows who is even going to play for this team. The one thing that is really hard to do is be even worse than the worst team ever. Even the White Sox are going to do better than last year and they aren’t even that great. It's a tough division and the National League is going to be tough again. They will be lucky to win 50 games this year, but they can win at least 50 next year. So let’s put them at 55-107.
Next on the Chopping Block?

The White Sox
